1. MOI III-Symposium at the Kardinal Schulte Haus in Bergisch Gladbach
On 22nd to 23rd February 2018, 21 PhD students of the Manchot Graduate School “Molecules of Infection III” presented their research projects out of the field of infectious diseases. It was the 1st Symposium of the Graduate School MOI III, funded already in the third round by the Jürgen Manchot Foundation.
The two days symposium was fully dedicated to the research projects and results of the Manchot Graduate Schools’ PhD students who showed their topics in oral presentations. Followed by lively discussions among the MOI III members, new ideas for the respective projects came up and already achieved results were debated.
The intimate linkage of every thematic area is one of the big advantages of the Graduate School. Thus several projects address different infection-related phenomena in the same model organism, e.g. Candida albicans. Some projects concentrate on the mechanisms that determine interactions of immune system and pathogen while others focus on molecular mechanisms employed by pathogens during infection.
The Symposium was completed by the guest speaker, Dr. Selene Mogavero (Leibniz-Institut für Naturstoff-Forschung und Infektionsbiologie e. V., Hans-Knöll-Institut in Jena) who talked about the discovery and mechanisms of „Candidalysin“. Candidalysin is a cytosolic peptide toxine produced by the fungal pathogen Candida albicans during human infection.
Besides the scientific presentations, networking among the PhD students of the Manchot Graduate School has been a main goal of the first Symposium to create synergies between the various expertises.
